WAIWHAI.
Taonga Puoro / Free Jazz

Descendant of Te Parawhau, Te Uriroroi and Ngāti Mahuta, founder of Noa Records, and inter-dimensional artist, WAIWHAI. (Rāhana Tito-Taylor) walks under the tutelage of many giants in form and spirit from various musical traditions as an exponent of taonga puoro (both in making and playing), psychedelic groove music, and avant-garde beats/free drumming. WAIWHAI.(fka WhyFi.) has been a trailblazing force within the Tāmaki Makaurau and wider Aotearoa music scene since the mid 2010’s, an artist who leans courageously into traditional and iconoclastic tendencies to stretch and weave sound and feeling, summoning spontaneous music that wades between the strange and familiar. In 2024 WAIWHAI. released ’Slowdown World’, a genre-bending body of compositions featuring Riki Gooch, Parks, JY Lee, Cory Champion, Julien Dyne, Abigail Aroha Jensen, Janina Nana Yao, Alistair Fraser, Navakatoa Tekela-Pule and Jeff Henderson. Prior to this he produced Virtual Shadow Ensemble’s ‘KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!’, an album collaborated on virtually during COVID-19 lockdown which struck a chord with international audiences and went on to be included in the Quietus Reissues Etc. of the Year 2020 list. In 2023, WAIWHAI. assembled the Bitches Brew-esque ‘Waiata Kįnaki Group’ in support of Vieux Farka Touré, which included Jeff Henderson, Riki Pirihi, Eamon Edmundson-Wells, Abigail Aroha Jensen, and Navakatoa Tekela-Pule. WAIWHAI. also plays drums for Noa Records band LEAO, a pacific-glam outfit led by David Feauai-Afaese.
